Routes through

With Twenty First Century Science you have a number of options. You can choose the organization of the courses to suit your students and your department. You can run GCSE Science in Year 10 and then students can choose in Year 11 whether to take GCSE Additional Applied Science or GCSE Additional Science. Or alternatively you can run two GCSEs alongside each other, starting both in Year 10. There is also the option of Separate Sciences, and some students will take Entry Level.

Running Twenty First Century Science in your school – some common examples

School A
School A runs GCSE Science in Year 10. Almost all students take this and the rest take Entry Level.
In Year 11 students choose between GCSE Additional Applied Science or GCSE Additional Science. Some of the Entry Level students may go on to GCSE Science in Year 11.

School B
Students take GCSE Science in Years 10 and 11 and at the same time take either GCSE Additional Applied Science, or GCSE Additional Science, across the two years.
Students can opt for single award GCSE Science and study for it across Years 10 and 11.

School C
From Year 10 lessons are timetabled as Biology, Chemistry and Physics. In Year 10 all students take the GCSE Science element of these separate sciences. In Year 11 they can continue with the content of GCSE Additional Science in these 3 distinct areas, finishing the course with GCSE Science and GCSE Additional Science. They can choose to add in additional material to cover the 3 Separate Science qualifications. In this case they finish the course with GCSE Biology, GCSE Chemistry and GCSE Physics.

School D
From Year 10 lessons are timetabled as Biology, Chemistry and Physics and all students take the separate science options, ending with these three GCSEs at the end of Year 11. During the course a few students decide not to pursue separate sciences, and their Year 11 assessment entries are amended so that they complete GCSE Science and GCSE Additional Science instead.
